Your best bet is to pick up a few copies of Woodworker magazine, and also some do-it-yourself books on woodworking and furniture making. You can find many like this at Home Depot and Lowes. This will get you started and you can branch out from there.
Soft wood like pine is relatively easy to work with and fairly inexpensive. What you use depends on what you are making and the design. You can get ideas about this in the woodworking magazines.
